Create and view a discharge summary

Learn how to create a discharge summary from an appointment outcome or inpatient discharge, and how to view or print a completed summary.

Written by Connor Baeza

Discharge summaries in Rio are linked to specific clinical events, either an appointment outcome or an inpatient discharge. This article explains how to create a discharge summary, what to expect during the process, and how to view or print a completed summary.

⚠️Important: Before you can create a discharge summary, the relevant clinical event must be recorded in Rio. For appointment based summaries, the appointment outcome must be recorded. For inpatient summaries, a discharge date must be recorded on the admission.

Create a discharge summary

  1. Access the Outpatient Summary and Discharge Status screen from the patient's menu.
The Discharge Summary List screen is displayed, showing all available events with their discharge dates.

  2. Locate the relevant event in the list, this will be the appointment outcome or inpatient admission you want to create a summary for.

  3. Click Create Discharge Summary.
The Template Selection screen is displayed. The templates available will depend on your local system configuration.

  4. Select the appropriate template from the pick list.

  5. Complete the discharge details as required. Fields that can be auto populated from Rio data will be pre-filled. Complete any free text narrative fields as needed.

  6. Click Save.
The discharge summary is saved. Depending on your organisation's configuration, it will either be immediately finalised or saved as a draft pending review and authorisation by a clinician.

📌Note: If the summary is saved as a draft, a notification will be sent to the reviewing clinician. The summary will remain editable until it has been authorised.

⚠️Important: A discharge summary does not automatically update if information is changed elsewhere in Rio after the summary has been created. If relevant information is updated, you will need to edit the summary manually to reflect those changes.

Create a discharge letter

  1. Go to the patient's OP Report & Discharge Summary Status screen.

  2. Locate the event you want to create a letter for and click Create Letter.
The Template Selection screen is displayed.

  3. Select the required template from the drop-down.

  4. Click Create.
The selected template opens for editing in Microsoft Word (desktop) or Word Online (Microsoft 365), depending on your organisation's setup. Follow the steps in the relevant editable letter article to complete and upload the letter.

View a completed discharge summary

  1. Go to the Discharge Summary List screen for the patient.

  2. Click on the named form in the list.
The details of the selected discharge summary are displayed.

Print a discharge summary

  1. Open the discharge summary form.

  2. Click the print symbol.
The document is displayed in print view.

  3. Right click on the screen and select Print. Use the standard Microsoft printing options to print a copy.
