Rio is configured to capture data for three national datasets submitted to NHS England. Understanding which dataset applies to your service, and how Rio collects the required data, helps you ensure your organisation's submissions are accurate and complete.

The three national datasets
Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS)
The Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS) covers mental health, learning disabilities, and autism services. It is submitted monthly to NHS England and captures:
Referrals and contacts.
Care plans and Care Programme Approach (CPA) reviews.
Diagnoses and Health of the Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) scores.
Employment status, accommodation status, and legal status.
Rio supports MHSDS via the MHSDS Pre-Assembler. Key configuration areas include the Trust Uses MHSDS flag in DiagnosisConfig, CPA Review Read Only Fields, Staff Professional Group on HCP Registration, and HoNOS form configuration.
Commissioning Data Set (CDS)
The Commissioning Data Set (CDS) covers outpatient, inpatient, and A&E activity. It is submitted to NHS England via the Secondary Uses Service (SUS) and captures:
Referral details and appointment outcomes.
Diagnoses and procedures.
Waiting times.
Rio supports CDS via bulk update reports based on events between two chosen dates. Key configuration areas include the CDSXML5_BT system constant, the CDS Contracts/SLA screen, and appointment outcome codes.
Community Services Data Set (CSDS)
The Community Services Data Set (CSDS) covers community health services including health visiting, district nursing, and community therapy. It captures:
Referrals, contacts, assessments, and care plans for community patients.
Rio supports CSDS via the CAMHS Pre-Assembler for child health services. Key configuration areas include the Child Health module, Personal Social Services (PSS) master tables, and community appointment outcome recording.
How Rio captures national dataset data
Rio captures national dataset data through three mechanisms working together:
Structured screens. Built in Rio screens (Referral, CPA Review, Appointment Outcome, Inpatient Admission/Discharge) capture the majority of national dataset fields automatically via coded pick lists. These are the primary source of CDS and MHSDS data.
Assessment forms. Locally configured assessment forms capture supplementary data not available on built-in screens, such as HoNOS scores, employment status, accommodation status, and Section 117 eligibility.
Read Only Fields. The AssessmentReadOnlyFields master table enables data entered on an assessment form to be surfaced on structured screens (for example, the CPA Review screen) for national reporting.
đ¤Tip: Structured data using coded pick lists is always preferable to free text for national reporting. Free text cannot be reliably extracted or validated by the pre-assembler.
